The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota is racking up fatalities this year – as well as keeping law enforcement busy.
Monday, a 60-year-old Wisconsin man died instantly when a van pulled out in front of him. According to the Department of Public Safety, alcohol was not a factor and the man was wearing a helmet. This accident is still under investigation and it is unknown at this time whether the van driver was a distracted driver, a negligent driver or exactly what his reason was for failure to yield the right-of-way.
A 55-year-old Richmond Hills, Texas, man died on Monday when he ran off the road while going around a curve. He also was wearing a helmet. According to the Department of Public Safety, he was thrown off his motorcycle.
In addition to the fatalities, three more accidents, where victims suffered injuries, were also reported. A husband and wife from Nebraska, both in their fifties, were in an accident when the man – who was driving – lost control of the motorcycle on a curve. The wife was wearing a helmet, which resulted in only minor injuries for her; however, the husband’s injuries are life threatening.
While alcohol was not a factor in any of the accidents above, law enforcement has made 113 DUI arrests since Monday. Drug arrests currently total 102. These numbers will no doubt rise throughout the week.
