An elementary school teacher will be hospitalized for at least two months to recover from severe injuries she received when her car was struck by another vehicle. An unlicensed illegal immigrant is charged with reckless driving in what could have become a fatal car accident in Lake Geneva.
Documents filed in Walworth County Court say the 29-year-old immigrant was moving fast when his Chevrolet struck a car sitting at a four-way stop in early January. An investigating officer estimated the green Chevrolet driven by the suspect was sailing at 40 to 50 mph in a zone posted with a 25 mph speed limit.
Marijuana and drug paraphernalia allegedly were found when responding officers searched the immigrant’s vehicle.
The fifth-grade teacher’s vehicle was stopped at the Jefferson Avenue and Dodge Street intersection in Lake Geneva when her vehicle was hit. The woman’s vehicle was so badly damaged that rescue workers used Jaws of Life to remove het from the wreckage.
The seriously-injured woman was flown to Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee after an initial medical transport to Lakeland Medical Center. The accident victim’s husband stated in court papers that his wife will undergo several corrective surgeries to repair a fractured hip and pelvis.
If the Lake Geneva man is convicted of driving without a license, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, reckless driving and other charges, he could be imprisoned for more than four-and-a-half years. Fines may reach as high as $21,000, if the illegal immigrant is found guilty.
Charges were filed with the court about two weeks before the suspect’s scheduled preliminary hearing. Reports did not address whether the immigration status of the accused driver would have any bearing on the case.
